SUPPORTING EMOTINAL WELL-BEING BEYONG THE PHYSICAL EXPERIENCE OF PAIN
Living with persistent pain or a chronic health condition can influence far more than physical comfort. It may affect daily routines, relationships, independence, confidence, and the way you experience the world around you.
Renee Nelson, RCC, is a Registered Clinical Counsellor with a particular interest in supporting individuals navigating chronic pain, chronic illness, injuries, and significant changes in health.
Renee recognizes that the emotional experience of living with an ongoing health concern is deeply personal. For some, it involves adjusting to changes in energy or physical abilities. For others, it may mean navigating uncertainty, feeling misunderstood, grieving aspects of life that have changed, or finding new ways to participate in meaningful activities.
Her counselling approach provides space to explore these experiences without minimizing their impact or defining individuals by their diagnoses.
Drawing on more than two decades of experience in social work and community-based support, Renee brings a thoughtful understanding of the relationship between emotional well-being, personal circumstances, independence, and access to meaningful support.
She values collaborative care that respects each person's lived experience, recognizes individual strengths, and supports personal goals.
With Renee, counselling is about making room for your emotional well-being while honouring the realities of your physical health.
RENEE’S THERAPEUTIC APPROACH
Compassionate Care Grounded in Lived Experience
Renee's approach begins with understanding the person beyond their presenting concerns.
She recognizes that chronic pain and illness can intersect with emotional health, family relationships, financial circumstances, accessibility, and the experience of navigating healthcare or community services.
Rather than viewing these challenges in isolation, Renee brings a whole-person perspective informed by her extensive professional background.
Her counselling emphasizes:
Person-Centred Care: Respecting your experiences, preferences, and individual goals.
Strengths-Based Support: Recognizing personal resources and capabilities while acknowledging challenges.
Collaborative Goal-Setting: Identifying priorities that feel meaningful and realistic for your circumstances.
Emotional Exploration: Creating space to discuss uncertainty, frustration, grief, or changing expectations.
Self-Advocacy & Autonomy: Exploring ways to communicate needs, establish boundaries, and participate in decisions affecting your life.
Renee values thoughtful assessment, active listening, and a therapeutic relationship grounded in trust and respect.
Her goal is to provide a supportive counselling experience that acknowledges both the challenges you may be navigating and the possibilities that remain important to you.

Understanding the Emotional Side of Persistent Pain
Chronic pain is a real and often complex physical experience. Its effects can extend into emotional, social, and practical areas of life.
When pain persists, familiar routines may become more difficult. Activities that once felt effortless can require additional planning, while changes in sleep, energy, work, or social participation may introduce new sources of stress.
Counselling provides an opportunity to explore these experiences and their emotional impact.
Renee welcomes conversations about:
Stress and worry associated with persistent symptoms
Emotional exhaustion and changes in motivation
Feeling misunderstood or isolated
Adjusting to changes in daily activities
Navigating relationships and communicating support needs
Identity and confidence following changes in health
Finding meaning and connection within changing circumstances
Counselling does not replace medical assessment, diagnosis, or treatment for chronic pain. Instead, it can complement appropriate healthcare by addressing the psychological and emotional aspects of living with persistent symptoms.
-
Making Space for Yourself Through Changes in Health
Receiving a diagnosis or managing an ongoing health condition can introduce questions that extend beyond medical care.
You may find yourself reconsidering your routines, relationships, future plans, or expectations of what everyday life should look like.
Renee understands the importance of approaching these experiences with sensitivity and without assumptions about what adjustment should involve.
Her counselling interests include supporting individuals who are navigating uncertainty, adapting to changing abilities, or seeking ways to maintain a sense of independence and personal identity.
The focus is not on expecting you to feel positive about every experience. It is about creating space for the full range of emotions that can accompany health-related changes while exploring what is meaningful to you.

Experience That Looks Beyond the Diagnosis
Before entering counselling practice, Renee spent more than two decades working in government social services and community-based support.
Her professional experience includes working with children, youth, adults, and families navigating developmental disabilities, complex support needs, mental health concerns, and significant life circumstances.
Through her work with British Columbia's Ministry of Children and Family Development, Renee has supported individuals and families with assessment, planning, service coordination, and access to community resources.
This experience has contributed to her understanding of how health and disability-related challenges may influence independence, relationships, family responsibilities, and everyday participation.
Renee also completed her clinical practicum with the Maples Adolescent Treatment Program, supporting youth within a multidisciplinary clinical environment.
Her background brings an additional perspective to counselling: recognizing the person within the broader context of their relationships, environment, strengths, and available supports.

Navigating Health Changes Together, with Understanding and Connection
When one partner is living with chronic pain, a long-term illness, or the effects of an injury, both individuals may experience changes in their relationship. Familiar routines can shift, responsibilities may evolve, and conversations about physical limitations, emotional needs, or the future may become more complex.
Renee Nelson, RCC, brings a thoughtful, whole-person perspective to understanding how health challenges can influence relationships. Drawing on her extensive background supporting individuals and families, she recognizes the importance of maintaining each person's voice, dignity, and independence while navigating changing circumstances together.
Whether you're adjusting to a new diagnosis or have been managing an ongoing health condition for years, counselling can provide space to explore:
Communication & Emotional Connection: Expressing needs, concerns, and expectations while making room for each partner's experience.
Caregiving Roles & Shared Responsibilities: Navigating changes in household responsibilities, caregiving expectations, and the balance between support and independence.
Intimacy & Affection: Exploring how pain, fatigue, physical limitations, or emotional stress may influence closeness, affection, and intimacy.
Relationship Identity & Changing Dynamics: Understanding how health-related changes may affect established roles, shared activities, and future plans.
Your Relationship Is More Than the Challenges You Face
A chronic health condition may become part of a couple's shared experience, but it does not have to define the relationship.
With compassionate communication, mutual understanding, and respect for each partner's needs, couples can explore meaningful ways to remain connected while adapting to life's changing circumstances.

BEYOND THE COUNSELLING SESSION
Finding Joy in Nature, Family & Everyday Moments
Outside of her counselling practice, Renee enjoys embracing the simple experiences that bring connection, creativity, and joy to everyday life. Whether she's exploring a hiking trail, spending time outdoors, or enjoying the energy of a live music concert, she appreciates opportunities to step away from daily routines and experience something meaningful.
At home, Renee enjoys baking and sharing everyday moments with her son and partner. Their dog and cat also bring plenty of personality, laughter, and unexpected humour into family life.
With a professional journey spanning more than two decades in social work before transitioning into clinical counselling, Renee values lifelong learning, meaningful relationships, and the many ways people find purpose throughout different stages of life.
These personal interests reflect her appreciation for the experiences that make life fulfilling, from time spent in nature to the comfort of familiar routines and connections with loved ones. Renee recognizes that joy, belonging, and personal meaning can look different for everyone, and she brings that same openness and curiosity to the people she meets.
